Féile na Scoileanna is a child-centred festival of music, dancing, drama and verse speaking, which had its inception in 1959, the same year as the Waterford Festival of Light Opera. The committee are a voluntary organisation, made up of primary school teachers who help the youth of Waterford and its environs to express themselves in music, song, dance or drama, before a live audience in a strictly non-competitive atmosphere.
The aims of Féile na Scoileanna include building the childrens confidence in themselves, stimulating their interest in and appreciation of one another by viewing and participating in stage productions, raising the standard of music and drama in schools and affording an opportunity for parents to see the work being done in schools.
At the very first Féile, 3000 children presented 150 items in 7 performances. The diversity of the programme ranged from Infant percussion bands to Spoken verse choirs comprised of older children. Hundreds of would-be patrons had to be turned away from the Theatre Royal.
Since 2014, Féile na Scoileanna has been staged in Mount Sion Primary School Hall. The committee and the staff of the Theatre Royal met to discuss Féile returning to the Theatre Royal.
June 12th and 13th 2019 marks the return of Féile na Scoileanna to the fabulous surroundings of the Theatre Royal.
