This chronology refers to both the theatre and the historic context locally and nationally.

The 1700’s see the establishment of a Playhouse & Assembly Rooms due to a rise in prosperity in the city.  Dating as far back as 1779 we see how the developing theatre coincides with some of the most historic events at home and abroad.

The late 1800’s saw the upgrade of the Playhouse in the west wing of the City Hall building. 

The early 20th Century is notable for the introduction of ‘cinematograph’ performances to co-exist with traditional stage entertainments.
