Opening Night of MY REAL LIFE
Wexford was out in force at the Theatre Royal last Friday night for the opening night of My Real Life, a play written and directed by two of the Model counties foremost artistic sons, Eoin Colfer and Ben Barnes. In the run up to the Three Sisters 2020 bid for European Capital of Culture, it was great to witness such cooperation between two of the three urban locations who are party to the bid. Friday night was also the launch night of the Theatre Royals summer season, which includes, along with My Real Life, Nathan Carter, Albert Hammond, Comedy Nights, Roast and The Bootleg Beach Boys amongst many others. Patrons were treated to Pressco along with finger food as they mingled and chatted prior to the performance.
The play itself was a resounding success with Don Wycherley receiving a well deserved standing ovation. While the subject matter of the play is very deep, there were many highs along with the lows which the audience responded to. Known for his performances in film and TV, Don Wycherley proved that he is as natural on the stage as he is in front of the camera. To perform such material without the crutch of other cast members, while keeping the audience spellbound, is no easy task. The general consensus was a well acted performance in a well written and directed play.
It's rare that a writer of international renown premiers his play in Waterford, to secure the services of one of Irelands most renowned actors is an added bonus. This play is a rare oppertunity in our city to witness the confluence of such talents. My Real Life is one play not to be missed. Tickets are still available for the run that continues every Thursday and Friday at 8.00 for the month of July.
