September at the Theatre Royal

September sees the beginning of an exciting period here at the Theatre Royal with the launch of our Autumn Season Brochure. Once again, all ages and all tastes are catered for in the month ahead. Below is a short synopsis of what we have on offer.

From Co Donegal, the hilarious Conal Gallen brings his slapstick routine to the Theatre Royal for the first time. Gallen’s performances incorporate sketches and songs including the adventures of Murphy, a hapless Irish tourist abroad. “Only Joking”, Colan’s latest offering, is regarded as his best show to date and his brand of humour is guaranteed to have audiences in stitches. Conal Gallen performs Friday 9th September at 8pm, tickets €26, (Early Bird offer €23 ends September 5th).

David Hennessy Musical & Dramatic Society presents ‘One More Enchanted Evening’ featuring Derek Ryan. Tipperary native Derek started out in Rathmines Musical Society and along the way he has performed in the world famous Carnegie Hall in New York and turns out regularly with his own ensamble, ‘The Two and a Half Tenors’. The audience on the night can expect songs such as “If I Were a Rich Man”, “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, “My Way” and local favourite, “In Happy Moments” from Maritana. MD for the night is the renowned David Hayes, himself no stranger to Waterford audiences, while Greta Rochford and Holly Ryan will make guest appearances. They will be joined on stage by a 60 strong choir encompassing students from Waterford and Dungarvan. One More Enchanted Evening takes place on Saturday 10th September at 8pm, tickets €20 Stalls and Dress Circle, €16 Upper Circle.

The Theatre Royal is delighted to welcome back Ireland’s premier ballad group, The High Kings. Featuring two Waterford born members along with a Mooncoin native in the lineup, this is very much a homecoming concert. Having previously released two studio and one live albums, The High Kings new album, “Grace and Glory” sees the group evolve and develop a new course for Irish ballads. While showcasing songs from the new album, audiences can also look forward to old favourites such as “Will Ya Go Lassie Go”, “The Parting Glass” and “The Black Velvet Band” amongst many others. The High Kings perform on Sunday 11th September at 8pm, tickets €25/€23 conc.

TheatreBox Productions return to the Theatre Royal with the iconic family favourite, Grease. Following on from last year’s highly successful West Side Story, TheatreBox Productions have developed a reputation for high quality shows performed by a talented and enthusiastic cast. Grease, the original High School Musical, follows the fortunes of Danny and Sandy along with their respective gangs of friends. Featuring all time classics such as “Greased Lightnin”, “Summer Nights” and “You’re the One That I Want”, it’s a musical that never disappoints. Grease takes place Thursday 15th – Saturday 24th, tickets; Preview Thursday 15th €10, Friday 16th – Saturday 24th €20.

To mark Culture Night, there is a free Historical Tour of Theatre Royal. Experience the old and the new as our guides take you from a classical Georgian building to its award winning 21st century extension. Hear the tales of the legendary performers who graced the stage over the years and the ghosts who continue to perform. View the auditorium from the stage while taking a tour of the backstage, technical area and dressing rooms. The Historical Tour of Theatre Royal takes place on Friday 16th September at 6pm and is Free.

Eric Lalor & Comedy Guests makes a welcome return to the Theatre Royal after three highly entertaining comedy nights here during the month of July. Eric’s first comedic performance was in front of the nation as he was a participant on Des Bishop’s “Joy In The Hood” in 2006. Since then Eric has won the Comedy Cellar and Capital Comedy Club’s Best Newcomer Award along with winning the Irish Stand-up of the Year twice. A regular at Electric Picnic, The Cat Laughs along with the London Irish Comedy Festival, Eric is familiar to many as the loathsome Cathal Spillane in Fair City.  Eric and guests perform on Wednesday 28th September at 8pm, tickets €11.

Finally, Waterford’s own Barrack Street Band present “The Phantom Returns”. Featuring music from film, theatre and the classics, ‘The Phantom Returns’ is a night packed with box office sensations from the best of the West End, to Queen, to James Bond and many more. The show features West End star David Shannon, known for having played the role of the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera and Jean Valijean in Les Miserables. This promises to be a memorable night in our Victorian theatre. The Barrack Street Present: The Phantom Returns takes place on Friday 30th September at 8pm, tickets €17.50.

So that’s September covered, please keep a lookout for our Autumn Season Brochure which lists what the theatre has to offer up to December. I’ll be back next month with a more detailed breakdown of what’s on offer for October. Till then …
